Finding belief in the fog

How do you buy into something you don’t yet believe in? When you can’t see the way forward. When there is a disconnect between what you want and what you believe is possible. You may seek change, even crave it. And yet, a healthy dose of skepticism, some baggage packed with failures, and seemingly insurmountable challenge that lay ahead holds your heart on a tether. If you run too fast to the end of the leash, you’ll be jerked back to a hefty dose of reality. If this resonates, I want to invite you to give yourself permission not to believe right now. Just be where you are.

Can I take you on an imaginary walk? Imagine it’s intensely foggy. As you look out into the impenetrable air you see gray. Haze. Nothingness. It may feel uncomfortable, ominous, isolating, even terrifying. How uncertain it feels to be unable to see your way forward. How uneasy. Even so, because we can’t see beyond the thickness in which we are enveloped, does this mean there is nothing out there beyond it? Well that’s silly, of course not! But, how do you know

You don’t for sure, but you believe there is. Maybe you’ve been along this route before and can picture what’s present on a sunny day. Maybe you’ve never visited this path in your life. Either way, you may not know what’s beyond the fog, but you believe there is something. So here, in the thickest of fogs, what do you know? Can you see your feet? How about the ground right around them? What happens if you take a single step? What does the path look like now? What newness have you discovered a mere 12 inches from your last location? Each step you take reveals more about what lies ahead. As you take step after step after step, you walk yourself right out of the fog. And the path becomes clear. You can now see that you were right to believe

Coming back to yourself now, consider the following:

  1. Where are you now? Who are you now?

  2. Do you want something to change in your life? Do you want to be or feel different?

  3. Do you believe in your ability to take the next immediate step forward?

The rest will become visible as you walk through the fog. I wonder how it would feel to pivot from focus on belief in an outcome to trusting in your ability to navigate as things unfold. To trusting in your ability to adapt. To believing that you will get to wherever it is you’re going, even if it’s a single step at a time.

Here to take the first step with you. And the one after that. And the one after that.
